When I was apprenticing under Sal Trapanni, the first thing he demonstrated to me involved Kirby. He asked me who my favorite artist was and of course I said Jack Kirby. Sal then placed a sheet of tracing paper over a page Jack had done. It was blatantly obvious that the anatomy was way off, but as Sal said, it didn't matter because the style was just so damn great.

I caught on to Kirby later than I’d like to admit and what I’ve learned most studying his work is how to tell a story! Where one may display a single act in a single panel with balloons and captions to tell a bigger story Kirby seemed to tell that bigger story in a single panel with a single illustration. Incredible.

He also untethered the human body in action from it's more ridged past. I think that was clearest in his work on the Captain America books. Cap became a mixed martial artist/gymnast, long before others would.
