A Caterpillar, a Bee and a Very Big Tree - page 38. Ink and colored-pencil. **** WE ARE STILL SEEKING A PUBLISHER FOR THIS BOOK!!!! **** Our book is about a caterpillar named Gus who is a self-proclaimed procrastinator and who does things his own way. He befriends a bee, Shoo, who is allergic to pollen. Even though this unlikely pair is not well-received by their peers, they work together to save the entire tree from an approaching storm and save those who wouldn't give them the time of day. The book's theme is perseverance in the face of adversity, and doing what is right, no matter what the risk. Written by Dicksy Wilson and Derek Sanders. Copyright 2008 D. Sanders

A Caterpillar, a Bee and a Very Big Tree COVER - ink and colored-pencil. Zoe - pencil on paper. This is a portrait that I drew of our sweet little girl, Zoe. She is the light of my life, and there is no artist - dead, alive, or yet to be born - that could ever truly capture the beauty that she possesses. I drew this as a birthday present for my wife, Ashley. Copyright 2011 D. Sanders

From the Ashes - 12 x 18" acrylic on canvas. This is the cover that I designed for Severmind's 2nd CD. This time, I had a little more time to come up with a concept and add a little more detail to the design. Copyright 2009 D. Sanders

Severmind - 12 x 18' acrylic on canvas. This is the cover that I painted for the debut CD from the band Severmind. I am the drummer for the band - check us out on facebook! I only had a week to come up with a concept and throw something together, but it turned out OK. Copyright 2007 D. Sanders

Top of the World - 12 x 18" acrylic on canvas. This painting was just a fun exercise in color for me. I have wanted to go back and touch this up a hundred times and add a moon. Maybe someday. Copyright 1998 D. Sanders.

Why 2K? (Hope Remains) - 12 x 18" acrylic on canvas. This painting was done during the Y2k craze before the new millenium began. All of the doomsayers were preaching the end of the world, and I painted this for myself as hope for the future. Copyright 2000 D. Sanders

The Depths of Despair - 10 x 8" on canvasboard. Another of my darker subjects. This painting is my attempt to convey the feeling that you have when your world is ripped apart. It started out as a painting sketch/figure study from Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy, but it turned out well enough for me to add the background. Copyright 1998 D. Sanders

Leap of Faith - 12 x 18" acrylic on canvas. I love the female form, and what could be better? The female form with wings. Once again, the detail in the rocks took the most time for me, but the more I worked on it, the more I wanted to detail it. Copyright 1999 D. Sanders

Time Out of Mind - 12 x 18" acrylic on canvas. This signifies my release from a very tumultuous time in my life. Sometimes, the time we spend doing something makes no sense, and we have to fight to get up out of the barren landscape into the blue skies of the future. The closed book signifies opportunities that have become closed to us, and the open book signifies the opportunities that we still have. Copyright 2001 D. Sanders

Defending the Nest - acrylic on 30 x 40" canvas. Although I have drawn many dragons and griffins, this is my first attempt at painting them. This painting took approximately 100 hours to complete; mostly because of the detail in the rocks. It signifies my protective nature over my family. When my wife became pregnant with our daughter, Zoe, I added the egg in the nest. Copyright 2009 by D. Sanders

Children's Book Illustration
About Me:
The Colonel is a Tulsa-based artist whose primary focus is fantasy painting and children's book illustration. Varying in styles, he has the ability to move from the very dark side of artistic expression, to the fantastical side of angels and fairies, to the whimsical side of children's art. Well-versed in multiple mediums and disciplines, this artist can change gears on a dime and pick-up a new project and go in an entirely different direction without losing his train of thought or inspiration. Derek has been an artist for almost 35 years, but this is his first time to venture into a public forum dedicated to art and artists.
