©2009 AS157C Illustration and Narrative State Park. The Red-cockaded Woodpecker is a sedentary dweller preferring Longleaf pine trees that dominate southern forests. The woodpecker prefers to nest in living trees to take advantage of heartwood softened by fungus. Current estimates locate about 5,000 groups of Red-cockaded woodpeckers, 12,500 birds, representing about 1% of the woodpecker’s original population.

©2011 AS179C Illustration and Narrative State Park. Anglers find challenge in the ability of Largemouth Bass, a prominent fresh-water sport fish to break the water surface while throwing a hook. Dragonflies have migrated on earth for 325 million years. There are dragonflies known to travel 11,000 miles in a season. That is over twice the distance Monarch Butterflies migrate.

©2002 OS104G Illustration and Narrative Botanical Garden. Within the Everglade ecosystem, a forest of predominately Pond-apple, ash and cypress trees interacts with bromeliads, moss, and fungi, to create a habitat for an orchid and a moth. Timed to the rainy season and increasing water level, the bloom stalk of the Ghost Orchid rises from its leafless hibernation on a non-specific host tree to exist exclusively in southern Florida and Cuba.

American Naturalist John Bartram, Presidents Thomas Jefferson and George Washington along with Governor Wentworth of New Hampshire, planted Lilacs in America. Now naturalized, the Southern European native Common Lilac attracts bees, butterflies, beetles, ants and birds with its sweet fragrance.

©2009 AS158C Illustration and Narrative Div Forestry. Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon brought Andalusia horses to Florida in 1521. This was 11,000 years after the extinction of all horses in the Americas. The stock from explorers was used by Native Americans and settlers and became known as The Cracker Horse. This horse was used during the American Civil War and Cuban War of Independence. Today there are approximately 800 horses living with blood lines to the original Spanish breed.

©2009 FS128W Illustration and Narrative The inspiring publication titled “Hoping for Spring” by author Bishop Kay Ward in collaboration with publisher IBOC Bethlehem, PA. Debra illustrated Trillium grandiflorium for this book. The illustration line drawing was used as the backdrop to the cover while the watercolor painting is shown complete on the cover with captions laced throughout the book. Bishop Ward included Debra’s natural history narrative detailing the story of White Trillium. ISBN 978-1-933571-19-15.
