This is the completed and sales cover for my novel Elizabeth and the Observatory available through Outskirts Press now. It seems rare that the author of a book is able to also illustrate the cover. Usually the cover is 'farmed' out to another specialized cover artist who them designs his own interpretation of the story and illustrates that. Here Elizabeth on the cover is exactly the Elizabeth that is depicted as she appears in the novel.

This is the update-in-progress version of the GI Joe character that is also featured in my portfolio as simply the line art. Zarana is a member of a biker gang from the Florida Everglades, the gator around her neck reminds her of home. I included chaps on her legs because she rides motorcycles. I tried to not use Lara Croft, Tomb Raider as an example,The jacket is pulled tight for mobility and avoiding snags.

This is how I use Photoshop as a means to try out new ideas and to determine how I will render things when I do an illustration. I use Photoshop as a testing ground and not as the beginning, middle and end of my illustrations. This is the companion piece to Elizabeth's wedding dress illustration. The character in the course of my novel Elizabeth and the Observatory, suffers an injury to her face and I needed to determine on a real photograph just what the injuries would look like, and whether I could make them sufficiently believable enough without going 'over-board'. For those of you that are curious, the woman is actress Abbie Cornish. When the her characters illustrations were done completed, I realized as a brunette she is a dead-on likeness for my character Elizabeth Stratin and I use her as the model for all Elizabeth Stratin illustrations.

This is a rendering of Elizabeth Stratin as she appears at the end of my novel from Outskirts Press: Elizabeth and the Observatory. This is the wedding dress she appears in. This is to Illustrate my ability to design outfits of a non-military nature and render people in addition to rendering and illustrating machines and space-craft.

This is the original photograph that is a companion to the ruined Observatory photograph that was put into Photoshop and altered. Save for the removal of a few modern improvements made to the Observatory since the time of the original in 1900, it is virtually unaltered.

This is the Royal Observatory in London as represented in my novel The Royal Observatory. This is the aftermath of a major fire has gutted the facility. This was from a photograph of the real Observatory in London and I dropped it into Photoshop and altered the photograph until it looked as though it as been through a fire.

This is an example of how I took a design through the evolutionary process. It is very different than what is the normal standard of finding the design my doing smaller rough sketches first then working your way to a final. I started with the general premise of what I wanted and grew the design from there.

A re-design of the GI JOE character from the 1980's toy-line called 'Zarana'. I took what was from the original character a rather 80's punkish look and up-dated it to fit in more with today's ideas of what a female character that is a soldier-mercenary would best look like.

This is a size comparison of the original illustration of the Tri-pod 'the smaller one' next to the design that was eventually created from it and used in the novel The Royal Observatory. It is a good representation of how far a thought for a creation can be pushed.

About Me:
Wrote The Royal Observatory, published by Vantage Press and presently in production of Elizabeth and the Observatory being published by Outskirts Press. These are a trilogy of books which are a retelling of H.G.Wells The War of the Worlds that takes place in the original time-frame of 1900.
I designed the machines and the creatures that are in the novels. As well as having done all the illustrations in the novel myself. The cover is also my illustration.
I possess skills in both illustration and writing novels.
