I’m a ball of energy that loves to travel, explore and thrive on challenges. I was trained as a journalist (B Hons Journalism degree - University of Stellenbosch), but when my children were small I also ventured into the fields of public relations, management, marketing, sales, tourism, hospitality, photography, research, community projects and conflict resolution. Till recently I was the Editor of a glossy 96 page monthly lifestyle magazine, Anytime Anywhere. The target market is the 6-12 LSM group and the contents include articles on tourism, travelling, lifestyle, good news, food and interesting people. My job entailed being the face of the magazine; deciding on the theme for each issue; compiling of content and the pagination; working with freelance writers; research into articles as well as the main feature and some other articles. I normally do my own photography and some of my photographs have been used for the front cover (Oct & Nov 2009 issues). Although the rest of the team was based in Johannesburg, I did most of my work from Mossel Bay where I live. I traveled to Johannesburg on a regular basis and stayed there for 7 – 10 days to put the mag to bed. Apart from the magazine I’m still involved in mainstream journalism and freelance for Die Burger (a daily paper), a Media 24 newspaper as well as the weekly community papers of Group Editors which belong to the Caxton Group. I also head up a free full colour lifestyle magazine in the Garden Route, called GR Lifestyle. For the past eight years I’ve been handling the media as well as the image building of the Garden Route Casino in Mossel Bay. Previously I’ve also done image building for the Mossel Bay Municipality as well as the Mossel Bay Tourism and the Bartholomeu Dias Museum, where I am a Board Member appointed by the Premier of the Western Cape. During the eighties and again in the nineties until 2003 I was involved in Centre Management: first as public relations officer and media consultant and later as Centre Manager of the Knowles Centre, now known as the Mossel Bay Mall. My main duties included the sourcing of new tenants to fill the centre (which at that stage only had a 60% occupancy) as well as to form and execute a Merchants’ Association to encourage tenants to become involved in the running of the centre. I’m career orientated and thrive on deadlines. I believe in integrity and have long discovered that a quick scoop at the expense of a long relationship is definitely not worth it. I’m community driven and have been involved in numerous projects during the past years. Since 1992 I worked in the ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training) field; first as facilitator, then coordinator of the project and now I serve on the governing body of the Mossel Bay Community Learning Centre. I was also part of a group of people who had a dream to establish a community radio station, which today is a fully fledge station: Eden FM. Initially I was involved in reading the news (both English and Afrikaans) as well as presenting programmes for business people and a women’s programme. I was also part of the breakfast team. During the nineties I was trained as a community conflict resolution handler as part of Project Saamspan under the auspices of the Centre for Conflict Resolution at the University of Cape Town. As Marketing Manager of the 4 star Diaz Strand Hotel in Mossel Bay, I had the privilege to travel extensively abroad to promote the hotel to the consumer as well as the trade at Tourism Shows. As Editor I’ve also had opportunities to lead several groups of advertisers/readers on trips to Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya and Mozambique. For recreation I travel and explore, cook and entertain, read and take pictures and love music, the theatre and good movies. And that’s me in a nutshell.
