My name is Amber Adcock. I am a first year student at Snead State Community College where I am studying journalism. Writing is my passion. My senior year in high school I was on the newspaper staff, and I loved it. I am now taking a mass communications class at Snead where I manage our school's blog. In November of 2009 I was diagnosed with a very rare, but serious, disease called Angio Dema. Angio Dema causes random, extreme, swelling of numerous body areas. My struggle with Angio Dema was like living a nightmare! I am the perfect person to write a blog about my illness. I want Angio Dema to be a well known disease so there will be better medical treatment. I feel alone with my illness because it is so rare, and I want others with this disease to know they are not alone.

For example, the image of the house often reflects the institution of family. The structure of the narrative itself tends to reflect linear time. I explore, however, the breaks in this structure: the images of dark space, fragmented space, dissolutions of form. I show how the modern and postmodern are on the continuum of realism. I look at writings about architecture, such as those of Anthony Vidler, and literary criticism, as well as scientific theories of chaos. The first half of my dissertation explores realism to postmodernism and the second half particular spaces: the labyrinth, the eye, and the seasons, where I discuss the intersection of space and time in poetic language. Each chapter discusses a different author, starting with the modernist Natalia Ginzburg. I explore the prose of Natalia Ginzburg, Christa Wolf, Barbara Neuwirth, and the poetry of Paul Celan, Andrea Zanzotto, and Friederike Mayroeeker.
