From: Noemi LoPinto To whom it may concern- I am a journalist and writer by training and by craft. I have spent the past 13 years honing my research, investigation and writing skills. I have spent the past six years covering the goings on at the Alberta legislature, first as a city beat reporter for the Edmonton Journal, then again as a managing editor of contract magazines for Venture Publishing, and then finally as the regional correspondent for Canada's 4th largest broadcaster, the Aboriginal People's Television Network. I covered Canadian federal politics almost exclusively. I covered the formation of the "world-class" oil sands advisory panel under then Environment Minister Rob Renner, a panel whose membership included former aide and senior advisor to the Prime Minister's Office, Bruce Carson. I was part of the APTN team which uncovered Carson's influence peddling and fraud on a national scale. Carson had built an Ottawa based company to sell water filtration systems to water-hungry First Nations reserves. The company, H2O Global, was charging up to six times the going rate for their filtration systems to impoverished communities, and Carson was funneling a large percentage of revenues from his sales straight to his escort girlfriend. I covered the Alberta angle to the story, interviewing politicians, academics and civil society groups about Carson's influence on provincial and federal politics. I have extensive experience as an editor, reporter and associate producer/producer. I began my career in journalism as a beat reporter in Montreal for an award-winning local weekly, the Montreal Mirror. It was a great time to be a writer. Columnists were respected, read every day/week by their avid fans. People still wrote letters to the editor...Remember those days? I earned my chops digging out gritty stories for the Mirror; I covered the then-burgeoning equal marriage fight for gay couples in Quebec, urban issues within Montreal (such as ************, the local economy, and a lot of people fighting city hall.) I also worked for CBC Montreal as a freelance reporter, and Radio Centre-Ville as the radio host of a weekly, French-language show. I did all of that for five years, before moving west to Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan in 2004 where I was hired to be the Managing Editor of the Meadow Lake Progress, a local weekly. I was the head of a small editorial team; I did all the copy editing, wrote a weekly editorial, a column, wrote my own articles, assigned and edited stories, chose and formatted photos, approved the final versions, and put the whole thing online. A year later I moved from Meadow Lake to Edmonton, to work for the Edmonton Journal as a beat reporter. As the correspondent for the Aboriginal People's Television Network. I researched, directed, wrote and produced my own news and feature stories every day for APTN's evening news hour. Collaboration was a big part of the job: writing for other reporters and hosts; interviewing guests for other segments of the show. I also wrote and produced two short-form documentaries for APTN during my time there: one on the Northern Gateway Pipeline, and one on failures within Alberta's child welfare system. I believe I have the writing, editing investigative and analytical skills you require. After 13 years in journalism I have the global array of media contacts and relationships that this kind of position would benefit from. I am not new to FOIP requests, to formulating pointed questions, to being answerable to the public and to a team of dedicated people. I am on a search for work that is fun, inspiring, life-affirming and challenging. I am just waiting for the right opportunity, and a great team. Please see my CV, attached, and feel free to contact me for any reason. Sincerely, Noemi LoPinto http://www.utne.com/mind-body/Germans-weekends-Native-Americans-Indian-Culture.aspx http://www.albertaviews.ab.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/lopintonov2006.pdf Curriculum Vitae Education: Concordia University: Bachelor of Journalism, minor in Photography, 2004.
